HABITAT BLITZ 2006!
Fact Sheet

Motto:
I came, I sawed, I hammered.

Dates:
June 9-24, 2006 (Friday start)
Dedications: June 24, 10 a.m.,
Habitation celebration: June 24, 11 a.m. at St. Vincent’s Park—corner of Howard and Emerson, behind St. Mary’s of Michigan (combined with Cathedral District Neighborhood Association Annual Picnic) Location, scattered sites: Cathedral District in the city of Saginaw on S. Warren and Cornelia near Atwater; South 15th Street (site of 2004 blitz), and two sites on Saginaw’s west side: Webster (near Waller) and Barnard (near Houghton).

Saginaw Habitat for Humanity’s tenth annual blitz build—over 1,000 volunteers will participate. Habitat returns to this deserving neighborhood, site of the 1998, 1999 and 2005 blitz builds, where over 1,000 volunteers came together each summer for two weeks. Strong support has come from site sponsors St. Mary’s of Michigan, and the Cathedral District Neighborhood Association, which welcome the revitalization efforts.

HABITAT BLITZ 2006! is an opportunity to build houses, build lives, and further rebuild a community. Returning house sponsors include General Motors Powertrain & UAW, and five groups of churches— United Methodists, Catholic Churches of Saginaw County, Lutherans (ELCA and LCMS), African American Christian Unity and Church Workers United. Each house sponsor pledges a minimum of $30,000 toward the $74,000 construction cost of its house and recruits and schedules all the volunteers. Returning radio partners WSGW 790 AM, WTLZ 107.1, 96 WHNN, Wheelz 104.5 & 101, Z93 WKQZ, The Bay 104 FM and 1400 AM and 97.3 Joe FM play key roles in recruitment and awareness-building, as do partners WNEM TV5 and 1250 AM are also on-board to help!

Further support comes from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority in the form of homebuyer downpayment assistance, and generous individuals, foundations, churches, businesses and other local organizations.

Pepsi Bottling Group will again provide all beverages for the blitz volunteers.

WNEM personalities Erica Donerson and Katie O’Mara are Honorary Chairpersons of the blitz, following Councilman Amos O’Neal (2005) Mayor Wilmer Jones Ham (2002-2004) and former Mayor Henry Marsh, who retired following the 2001 blitz after two years as chair. Mr. Marsh joined Habitat after watching hundreds of volunteers build five homes in his Cathedral District neighborhood in 1999.

Families are selected for Habitat homeownership based on criteria of need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner. Habitat sells its houses for no profit and with a zero-interest loan to families who meet the demanding criteria. Homebuyers also contribute a required 250 to 400 hours of labor—sweat equity—to the construction of their houses. Nearly 40 hours is spent in classroom training learning homeownership skills and basic home maintenance.

SHFH builds and rehabilitates houses year round. Volunteer opportunities are available on many Saturdays and often during the week. The goal for 2006 is to provide simple, decent houses for a minimum of 10 deserving, qualified families. SHFH is one of 1,700 U.S. affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit Christian housing ministry dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing around the world. Founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, the Americus, Georgia-based nonprofit organization has built over 200,000 houses in nearly 100 countries.
